Lane County Adult Corrections
Parole and Probation Services
Training and Development

In February 1998, assisted by specialists provided through a grant from the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), a comprehensive Orientation Manual and a New Employee Training Manual were developed. The manuals were completed in August and put into use September 1998. These two manuals provide the basis for training all new employees.

In-service training is separated into required training, determined by job description, and optional training which includes everything from specific computer training offered through Lane County to job development seminars presented by international companies.

Due to the nature of parole and probation work, emphasis is placed on defensive tactics and firearms use and safety training. A minimum of 16 hours of defensive tactics training is required for all Parole/Probation Officers annually. All armed officers are required to re-qualify with their duty weapon on a regular basis. Specialized teams of trainers, consisting of current officers and supervisors, provide this training. Range Master for firearms training is Susan McFarland. All instructors, except trainees, are certified by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.

Training provides current information for specific jobs, develops skills to increase effectiveness and broadens each employee's knowledge base. This ultimately enhances career development and improves the work environment.
