Mayor Sid Leiken and FOOD for Lane County are teaming up to remind people that free lunches will continue to be served Monday through Friday at more than 60 sites throughout the county through August 22.
"We're trying to get the word out during a time when traditionally participation declines," said Summer Food Program Manager Karen Roth.
FOOD for Lane County’s Summer Food Program picks up where free and reduced school meal programs leave off, ensuring that Lane County kids continue to grow and learn during the summer by providing at least one healthy meal each day during the week.
The federally funded Summer Food Service Program provides free meals to all children and teens ages 2 through 18, regardless of income, race, ethnicity or disability. Toddlers 1-2 years of age may eat if accompanied by a responsible adult. For a complete list of sites and serving times, go to www.foodforlanecounty.org.
The Lane County Commission on Children and Families and local sponsors are working together to increase awareness and participation in the Summer Food Program. Local sponsors include FOOD for Lane County, Eugene School District 4J and Junction City School District. Outreach efforts such as bus advertisements, banners, and poster displays are being used to encourage as many children as possible to take advantage of this remarkable free lunch program.
With the help of these Summer Food sponsors, it is projected that over 128,000 free meals will be served to children in Lane County this summer.
