Lane County Government receives only 9 cents out of every dollar paid in property tax. How is that and other taxpayer money received by Lane County put to use?
In a commitment to open government, Lane County is now posting Transparency Spending and Revenue Receipt Reports each month on the County website. This new service provides details on all payable transactions over $100 – including who was paid, the type of expense, and what program or project initiated the expense. Additionally, any revenue received over $100 will also be posted with these and more details.
Commissioner Bill Fleenor, Chair of the Board of Commissioners, hopes that “the more transparency we provide…the higher level of trust and comfort the citizens will have with our decision making.”
Oregon Law requires specific financial data to be made available to the community, which the County currently provides. The Transparency Spending & Revenue Receipt Reports go above and beyond the legal requirements and make it possible for community members to view actual expenditures as they occur closer to ‘real time’ as well as providing more individual account detail.
Lane County’s Budget Office has continuously initiated projects to deliver more information to the community, working to meet its goal of providing “government accountability to the citizens of Lane County.”
For the past several years, the County has provided information on the General Fund services that includes detailed information about the cost of the service, the level of service being provided, and the outcomes (or performance results) that are measured to determine how well the service is being provided. This “budgeting for outcomes” approach is designed to ensure that tax dollars are allocated efficiently and that service is provided effectively.
The new reports are another avenue for community members to connect with and learn more about their Lane County Government, the services it provides and at what cost.
To access the reports, go www.lanecounty.org and click on the ‘For Residents’ tab then on the ‘Transparency Reports’ link.
