Lane County Waste Management Division is now collecting fluorescent 4-foot (and smaller) lamps from households in Cottage Grove and Creswell area.

Fluorescent lamps will be collected from Cascade Home Center at 49 South Sixth Street in Cottage Grove, and at Cascade Home Center, 104 South Mill Street in Creswell.

The program accepts 4-foot fluorescent lamps and smaller from households. Households with lamps larger that 4 foot and all businesses must go to Lane County’s household hazardous waste permanent facility for proper disposal. Businesses pay for disposal of their hazardous waste and must pre-register before disposal.

Lane County Waste Management Division and local area electrical utilities have been collecting fluorescent lamps from households at retail stores since 2004 in the Eugene/Springfield area.

According to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, fluorescent lamps can contain levels of mercury and lead that can make them hazardous waste when disposed. Mercury and lead are toxic metals that accumulate in living tissue and cause adverse health effects. In Oregon, several million fluorescent lamps each year are discarded, making these lamps the largest source of mercury in the states' solid waste system.
