Program Description

CaCoon assists families with children with special health needs, such as developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and other health issues that require special medical and parenting services.  Raising a child with special health needs can be challenging and rewarding.  It also can be confusing and exhausting - for the whole family.  A child and family may need the services of many different professionals and agencies.  They may have to travel away from home for specialized health care.  Sometimes they may just need to talk to someone who has been in their shoes and understand what they are going through.

The LCPH CaCoon Program helps families understand and meet their child’s special needs.   Professional, caring staff support families as they learn to care for their child and themselves.  CaCoon’s public health nurse can:

• Answer questions about a child's health needs and special care
• Help find special services as close to a child's home as possible
• Help prevent problems that could be related to a child's health condition
• Support families in times of stress and crisis
• Work with primary care physician to coordinate health care and specialty services
• Help families identify specialty financial services for which their child may qualify

The goal of CaCoon is to help families become as independent as possible.

• CaCoon improves the health and well-being of children born with special needs by ensuring these children receive the services they need to overcome or cope with their health condition.  
• Caring for a child with specials needs can be stressful, but CaCoon helps families learn to recognize their child’s milestones in development and celebrate successes. 
• CaCoon also strengthens communities by helping families find the right resources or develop the skills to meet their own needs.
