The mission of Lane County Government is to provide high-quality, local government services in a fair, open, and economical manner to best meet the needs and expectations of our citizens.
Strategic Plan & County Goals
The Lane County Strategic Plan 2001-2005 provided a basis for change, focused the organization's energies, identified ways to work differently, and was the catalyst for creating new ways to evaluate service priorities and service levels. In 2005, as the Strategic Plan timeline drew to an end, the Lane County Board of Commissioners began to annually review progress and set specific goals to guide the organization for the coming one to two years. These sessions have kept the Board and management synchronized in their efforts.
While the Lane County Goals focus leadership initiatives, they do not, in many cases, apply to the entire organization. The core strategies and organizational goals identified in the Strategic Plan continue to provide a framework for the wide range of services provided by our general purpose government.
Lane County leaders value planning and wish to return to comprehensive strategic planning. The last several years, strategic planning efforts have been indefinitely postponed in lieu of pressing budget issues demanding shorter term goals and action. The County has teetering for years not knowing if crucial Secure Rural Schools funding will abruptly end or continue – leaving the organization uncertain of its five-year future. Unsure if we would be planning for a much smaller, very different looking organization, comprehensive planning efforts ahve been further delayed.

Community Surveys
In 2009, Lane County opted to use the National Citizen Survey (NCS) in preparation for upcoming budget and strategic planning decisions. NCS is a collaborative effort between National Research Center, Inc. and the International City/County Management Association (ICMS).
The next Lane County Community Survey is scheduled for early 2011.
